Brocade this week said it is shipping its SDN controller and offering it free for one year.

Brocade's Vyatta Controller was announced last September. It is based on the OpenDaylight open source "Helium" release.

To help kicktart adoption of its SDN controller and associated products, Brocade is offering a free one-year license for the Vyatta Controller. The code is available now as a free download from the Brocade website.

A production license for the Vyatta Controller costs $100 per attached node per year, including support.

Brocade says the free offer will allow customers to experiment with the controller without investing in hardware or software integrations. The free license provides management of up to five physical or virtual network nodes in a non-production environment and includes 60 days of free 24x7 access to Brocade's Technical Assistance Center.

Brocade also this week announced the Brocade Vyatta Controller Developer Edition, which provides a set of tools, including templates, libraries and testing environments, to help developers write, test and deploy SDN applications. Developers retain full intellectual property rights to the applications they build, Brocade says.
