Juniper Networks this week extended its core router lineup with a compact, fixed-configuration model capable of 3Tbps.
The PTX1000 is a 2RU device that's powered by Juniper's recently announced ExpressPlus chipset. The service provider router is designed for distributed peering between cloud operators.

Some providers consolidate their peering points to a limited number of network locations, but distributed peering decreases application response time and increases reliability of fixed and mobile access, thereby increasing performance, Juniper says.
Juniper's ExpressPlus custom silicon is a 28-nanometer chip capable of driving 5x100G interfaces and a memory architecture that reduces power consumption and space requirements, Juniper says. The higher end PTX3000 and PTX5000 routers also incorporate this chip.
The PTX1000 also features flexible port interface options for investment protection and easier upgrades, Juniper says.
The PTX1000 router will be available in the third quarter. Juniper did not disclose pricing.
