Suncorp Bank has added a fingerprint login option to its iOS mobile banking app.
The feature will allow customers with compatible iPhone and iPad devices to log into their accounts from August 12.
Suncorp Bank digital banking manager Simon Clarke said the introduction of fingerprint login supported customer requests for quicker access to account balances and mobile banking services.
“40 per cent of our iOS customers already have a fingerprint ready device and are looking for more streamlined security options to manage their money on the go,” he said.
According to Clarke, the biometrics login allows customers to access their app without the need to remember a password or continually enter a passcode.
Fingerprint login is available on the iPhone 5s, 6, 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3.
A Suncorp Bank spokesperson said it would look to introduce fingerprint login for Android devices in the future pending customer demand for the feature and assessment of the successful uptake amongst customers during this initial launch phase.
Last month Brisbane-based fintech company TSWG launched an iOS and Android password management app that verifies a user’s identity by taking a snapshot of their eyes.
The eyeSafe app uses a smartphone's camera to record an eyeprint image and pattern matches the blood vessels in the whites of the eye.
The app can work even when people are wearing glasses and at night.
Late last year Westpac announced that its 'Westpac Live' mobile app will allow customers to log in using their fingerprint on a range of Android and iOS devices.
Logging in using a fingerprint will be supported on the Android-based Samsung Galaxy S5 and Note 4, as well as Apple's iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
"Over half of our digitally active customers are using mobile banking and now doing more than $50 billion worth of transactions each year," Jason Yetton, group executive, Westpac Retail, said at the time.
At the same time, Westpac subsidiary St George enabled biometric fingerprint app logins for Apple devices that support it.
