Ricoh Australia has signed up to the SoftLayer data centre in Melbourne so that its customers will experience less latency when using the vendor’s videoconferencing services.
According to Ricoh Australia managing director John Hall, video latency has been reduced from 220 milliseconds to 20 milliseconds in the data centre which connects to the IBM cloud.
SoftLayer is owned by IBM.
“Having a data centre located in Australia means customers can rest assured that their data is stored locally and securely, and is subject to all the relevant privacy legislations,” he said.
Ricoh Australia managed services group national product & marketing manager Stuart Hammond added that IBM’s cloud will allow Ricoh to scale services up and down to match demand.
SoftLayer operates data centres in Melbourne and Sydney.
The facilities provide all of SoftLayer's cloud services including bare metal and virtual servers, storage and networking in one integrated platform.
Scentre Group, which owns Westfield in Australia and New Zealand, has used the facilities to develop a hybrid cloud strategy.
In August 2014, the Group's IT director, Peter Bourke, said it could choose which data and applications go to the cloud and which stay on-premise.
"Within our environment, we have something like 280 workloads. We're going through each of those to determine where they best fit in the evolution of our strategy and the evolution of our use of the cloud," he said at the time.
