Telstra trials optical encryption on inter-city fibre

Data travelling at 200Gpbs encrypted

Telstra in partnership with Ericsson has deployed a new optical encryption offering from Ciena on the telco’s Melbourne-Canberra-Sydney route.

The 200Gbps trial employed US company Ciena’s WaveLogic Encryption offering, which is designed to reduce the risk of data breaches across long-haul networks. The product employs AES-256 encryption for in-flight data.

“Our world-first demonstration of the solution protects data whilst being transmitted at high speeds from one point to another,” said David Robertson, Telstra’s director, transport and routing engineering.

“Proving the functionality of this new encryption technology is important for Telstra to offer this additional service to our enterprise customers who need extra security levels. This programmable solution provides the option of self-managed encryption and Telstra-managed encryption. This alleviates our customers having to manage and pay for developing this service themselves.”

The test used Ciena's WaveLogic 3 Extreme transponder card.

The trial included having testing customer-managed and Telstra-managed encryption, according to a blog entry by Telstra's Andrew Leong.

Ciena’s WaveLogic Encryption was tested in Ericsson’s Port Melbourne lab before it was integrated into Telstra’s production network.

WaveLogic Encryption will be generally available in the first calendar quarter 2016, Ciena said.

“Previous infrastructure solutions have been cumbersome to manage and burdened by separate boxes, impacting throughput and latency,” Ciena senior vice-president and chief operating officer Francois Locoh-Donou said in a statement.

“Our new WaveLogic Encryption solution is simple to deploy and provides a strong and effective defence with an additional level of protection to enable end-to-end security.”
