NAB seeks CTOO following exec shake-up and departure of tech chief

Renee Roberts departs in restructure

A shake-up of National Australia Bank's organisational structure has resulted in the departure of its most senior technology executive.

NAB announced this morning that Renee Roberts, group executive enterprise services and transformation, would be leaving along with two other members of the bank's executive leadership team.

Enterprise services and transformation has become "Technology and Operations" the company said, and will be temporarily lead by Bob Melrose, executive general manager business management and personal banking, as acting Chief Technology and Operations Officer.

The bank said it would be conducting an internal and external executive search for the CTOO position, which reports directly to CEO Andrew Thorburn.

Thorburn said the "time was right" to refresh the executive team after two years of addressing "major legacy issues".

“We have had a very clear plan over the last two years and have taken the action required to execute that plan. We have made progress, our customers are noticing the positive changes and our staff engagement score is the highest it has ever been, but we need to do better,” he said.

“This new organisational structure will enable us to continue the pace of change while providing greater clarity for our customers and our people.”

Roberts joined the bank in August 2014 from Bank of New Zealand where she was chief risk officer. She had previously held roles with NAB over the course of a 25-year career in banking and finance.

She’s overseen a number of technology milestones: the pilot of NAB's Personal Banking Origination Platform (PBOP), the completion of the migration to NAB's Deer Park data centre, and the bank’s long-running NextGen core systems overhaul.

This year the bank is set to complete the PBOP rollout, described as the biggest technology overhaul in the bank’s history.
