Optus it installing small cells in 12 locations in the Northern Territory, the telco said today.

The small cells use satellite to deliver mobile phone services in areas that are out of reach of cell towers. They have a range of up to 3 kilometres.

The telco has previously conducted a small cell trial at Oodnadatta in South Australia.

“Optus is committed to delivering choice and competition for all Australians and we are pleased to announce the introduction of small cell mobile technology on this scale which will enhance customer experience for our customers in the Territory,” Optus Networks acting managing director, Dennis Wong, said in a statement.

“As the only Australian telco to own and operate mobile, fixed and satellite networks, this is a terrific initiative for Optus to leverage our expertise and introduce an innovative mobile and satellite technology solution to support our continued network expansion across Australia,” said Optus Satellite vice president, Paul Sheridan.

“The use of small cells allow for the efficient provision of telecommunications services in difficult and often costly locations. While quite common in highly populous CBDs, we believe this is an excellent way to deploy this type of technology to deliver services to areas that are remote and geographically challenging.”

Telstra has previously rolled out a number of data-only 4G small cells in regional areas, announcing last year that it intended to roll out more than 750 additional small cells areas of low mobile signal strength.

The Optus small cells will be installed at:

Mataranka
Daly Waters
Ormiston Pound Ranger Station
Elliott
Renner Springs
Three Ways
Barkly Homestead
