Della Bosca gets IT – and four other portfolios

Anyone hoping for the information economy to be propelled to new heights in New South Wales as a result of Premier Bob Carr's cabinet reshuffle may be disappointed as Labor's factional right poster-boy John Della Bosca takes over the reins as new IT Minister -- along with four other portfolios.

Apart from the glamour job of IT, Della Bosca will have to manage the attentions of trade unions with Industrial Relations, the big end of town with Commerce, all things 'special' with a Ministry of State and last but not least the regional area that really demands its own portfolio, the Central Coast.

Della Bosca undoubtedly brings first-hand knowledge of IT matters, especially the IT job market to his position having survived a controversy and calls to stand down over his wife's equity in recruitment firm HiTech, which formed part of a consortium headed by Logica that won a NSW state government e-procurement contract last year. Della Bosca replaces Kim Yeadon, who has been sent to the back benches.

Della Bosca's office would not comment on his appointment before his swearing in this Wednesday and his shadow is yet to be appointed.

New South Wales Opposition leader John Brogden was also unavailable for comment.
