New South Wales Police has cast the net for a new CIO in a move that suggests further shakeups in the IT shop and relationships with contractors and suppliers.
Reporting to Deputy Commissioner of Support Andrew Scipione, the position's selection criteria notably lists "experience in driving cultural change".
The CIO position has been graded at level four of the NSW senior executive service (SES), with up to a five-year contract being offered.
While the NSW Police did not return calls about the job, a source familiar with the force's IT requirements suggested that upgrading and integrating a number of disparate systems will be a pressing requirement fuelled by a force-wide mandate to provide better reporting and tracking of resources.
While the NSW Police has enthusiastically courted the media over IT-based recruitment into its "Special Services" wing this year, other IT projects have seen funding stall for major roll-outs such as the COPS2 upgrade project, its incident operations reporting system. Other abandoned schemes this year included a plan to give fine-issuing officers PDAs.
Despite such setbacks, the source said the timing was "ripe to get in there and get some of real bullshit sorted out. There's certainly long-term issues there, and you wouldn't the want job six months before an election".
