Microsoft aims to launch SQL Server 2000 in February

Microsoft will release its newest SQL server, which was code-named Shiloh, and will officially be called SQL Server 2000, on February 17, 2000, Microsoft announced on Monday.

Microsoft has been beta testing the upgrade with 750 companies, the software maker said in a statement. SQL Server 2000 will replace SQL Server 7.0, the company's existing relational database product.

SQL Server 2000 will be fully compatible with the long-awaited Windows 2000 Data Center, the company said.

According to Microsoft, other highlights include the software's ability to automatically register for Active Directory. Among other things, that capability allows system administrators to locate and backup users within a company who have not saved on the server within the last 24 hours, as well as easily updating registered server information, Microsoft said.

Pricing for the server was not disclosed.
