Japan Telecom Tests VoIP over 3G WCDMA Network

L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. on Wednesday said that it and Japan Telecom Co. Ltd. had conducted the first field trials of VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) over an experimental third-generation mobile phone network based on WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) technology.

Conducted in July and August at the Japanese operator's network center in Chiba, Japan, the tests proved that voice as well as data can be transported over an IP-based mobile network without any quality degradation in voice traffic, the Stockholm-based telecommunications equipment vendor said in a statement.

The trials were made using an Ericsson-developed algorithm called Robust Checksum-based Header Compression (ROCCO) that the vendor said it has submitted for standardization with the Internet Engineering Task Force.

WCDMA is a network technology that will be used in third-generation mobile networks by operators in Asia as well as Europe.

Earlier this week, Japan Telecom committed to a December 2001 launch date for its WCDMA network in Tokyo and other major Japanese cities.
