Nortel Inks Asian ASP Deal

Nortel Networks has signed a US$26 million contract to be the chief supplier and technology integrator for one of Taiwan's newest ASPs (application service providers) and Internet Data Center (IDC), the company said Thursday.

A consortium of Taiwanese and Asian companies agreed to develop eASPNet, which will offer a range of online business and ASP services. Initially, the eASPNet business focus will be limited to Taiwan, but it will then push deeper into the Asian market, the companies said in a statement. The business already has an online presence at http://www.easpnet.comIn a statement, Nortel Networks said it will design and build a carrier-grade IDC environment to deliver applications eASPNet plans to offer its customers. The companies involved expect the IDC to be one of the largest in Asia, featuring 105,000 square feet (9,450 square meters) of space. Nortel Networks did not provide a time line for when the center in Taipei will be completed.

EASPNet had its company launch Thursday at the World Trade Center Club in Taipei. Jackson Wu has been named the new company's chief executive officer.

Equity partners in eASPNet include Uni-President Enterprises Corp., Walsin Lihwa Holdings Ltd., Nortel Networks (Asia) Ltd., Compal Electronics Inc., Lippo Group, Ares International Corp., Cradle Technology Corp., IMS Information Management System Ltd., Mackay Telecommunication Inc., Chief Telecom Inc. and Southeast Asia Investment Holding Inc.

Strategic partners in the venture include Nortel Networks, i2 Technologies Inc. and Network Appliance Inc.
