Asian PC Vendors Dominate Local Markets Says IDC

Regional PC vendors are successfully warding off foreign competition in Asia's largest markets, according to an International Data Corp. (IDC) Asia-Pacific update report.

In what IDC analysts termed a danger sign for the world's leading PC companies, the report noted that PC sales growth in Asia, over the next five years, would be centered around emerging economies, where local vendors maintain a strong market presence.

China-based PC vendor Legend, had a 9 percent market share around the region, during the second quarter of 2000, according to IDC. Legend's market share, which represents a 108 percent increase in sales over the same period in 1999, was highlighted by IDC as an example of a robust local vendor presence, edging out such industry giants as IBM, Samsung, and HP in terms of the number of units delivered.

PRC-based companies Founder, Great Wall, Start and Hisense were also all mentioned as reporting year -on-year growth in excess of 100 percent. Overall, the PRC market showed 37 percent growth, driving more than one-third of sales in the region, according to IDC.

IDC also announced it was raising its full year forecast for PC sales in Asia, excluding Japan, up to 19.6 million units in light of 11 percent growth in sales experienced in the second quarter of this year compared to the first quarter.

IDC's forecast was also changed based on the 35 percent growth the market has witnessed over the previous year. According to IDC, total sales for the region, excluding Japan, reached 4.8 million units.

IDC Senior Analyst Davina Yeo projected PC demand to remain strong in Asia-Pacific as the region continues its economic upturn.
