Exodus Plans More Internet Data Centers for Asia

BANGALORE, INDIA (08/25/2000) - Exodus Communications Inc. plans to set up more Internet data centers in Asia-Pacific, over the next twelve months, the company's co-founder Kilaiyur Balakrishnan Chandrashekar told IDG News Service.

"We will be moving in the next one year into most of Asia, including China, which is a large market," he said.

Exodus, a leading provider of Internet hosting for businesses with mission-critical Internet operations, opened its Internet data center in Japan in December of last year, subsequent to its acquisition of Global Online Japan Co. Ltd., a Tokyo-based Internet hosting and solutions provider.

Exodus invested in Japan first because demand in Asia-Pacific for data centers had not yet reached critical mass, according to Chandrashekar. That situation is changing now as more content is being generated locally, new networks are being established to deliver it, and there is a larger number of users. Also some of Exodus' U.S. customers are setting up mirror sites in Asia-Pacific.

Exodus may invest in Internet backbones and fiber networks in Asia-Pacific if it makes economic sense, Chandrashekar said. the company already has investments in Net backbones and fiber networks in the U.S., besides its data centers.

India, however, is unlikely to figure in Exodus' plans anytime soon, primarily because the bandwidth is not available yet. "But I think that will be resolved soon," pointed Chandrashekar. "With all the bandwidth that is being put under the ground, I think you will see in the next 18 months phenomenal growth in bandwidth both in and out of the country."

A number of Indian companies have announced their intention to set up data centers in India, but so far Intel Corp. is the only multinational company to announce plans to establish a data center in Mumbai.
