ANZ slips up then zips up

The ANZ bank is yet to inform customers of an embarrassing nationwide processing error that caused duplicate deposits and withdrawals to be recorded on customer accounts yesterday.

According to an ANZ spokeswoman, the bank suffered from a "batch-processing error" on Tuesday, which left all ATM, Eftpos and credit card transactions conducted between 5:30am and 12:30pm that day susceptible to the duplication error.

All customers who deposited or withdrew money or paid bills yesterday between 5:30am and 12:30pm are likely to find the monetary value of those transactions doubled, she said.

ANZ will not inform customers of the hiccup or its resolution, she said, and the bank's website contains no information regarding the system malfunction. Only customers that contact the bank directly will be notified of the glitch.

"A number of customers won't have noticed," the spokeswoman said.

The bank's internal IT staff were currently attempting to fix the problem and expected to have account balances restored before tomorrow, ANZ said.

The cause of the problem was the bank's "transaction banking system", which failed to update company systems according to transactions conducted between 5:30am and 12:30pm, and so automatically restarted the updating process, leaving some account balances updated twice, the spokeswoman said.

ANZ would not reveal how many of its customers' three million bank accounts were affected by the glitch.
