Verizon Expands Wireless Web Service

BOSTON (07/17/2000) - Verizon Wireless is providing wireless Web access for its 25 million mobile phone customers under a deal with MicroStrategy Inc.'s subsidiary, Strategy.com, Verizon announced Monday.

Verizon customers can now access Strategy.com's Web portal, configured for display on mobile phones and pagers, through Verizon's Mobile Web service. The portal site will allow customers access to personalized finance, news, weather, sports and entertainment information. Customers also can subscribe to receive personalized alerts and reports about finance, weather and current news, said Aaron Radelet, a public relations analyst for Strategy.com.

"When you open up the Web browser window, it's going to be like a permanent bookmark on the phone," he said. "It's more convenient. It's not like (mobile phone) users have a keyboard."

While the companies wouldn't reveal financial details of the deal, Radelet said, "Strategy.com is moving aggressively to establish relationships" with wireless service providers.

The service is available for US$6.95, comparable to the e-mail account subscription price for AT&T Wireless Services Inc.'s Digital PocketNet service.

AT&T announced earlier Monday that it will add America Online Inc. e-mail and content to its wireless Web services.

Verizon is the wireless division formed by combining the U.S. wireless businesses of Bell Atlantic Corp., Vodafone AirTouch PLC and GTE Corp. Bell Atlantic and GTE recently completed their merger, forming a company called Verizon Corp.

Verizon Wireless, in Dallas, Texas, can be reached at +1-972-860-3200 or on the Web at http://www.verizonwireless.com/.
