Europolitan demos roaming phone-locating service

Swedish GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) operator Europolitan AB has demonstrated its new roaming system for positioning services in Sweden this week.

The technology used in the demonstration allows, for the first time, roaming for positioning services between operators to be as easy as roaming voice services, said Lotta Hansson, a spokeswoman for the company.

Europolitan and its global positioning systems supplier, Kipling AB, developed the system, which allows Swedish subscribers to use positioning services in another country, and vice versa. The roaming system automatically switches between networks whenever the physical GSM handset crosses an international border. Although it is still in the testing stages, eventually it should allow positioning tracking in any country using the GSM standard, Hansson said.

This is especially useful for companies that need to manage their vehicle fleets, as they can now track them once the vehicles leave Sweden, she said.

The demonstration, which took place in Karlskrona, Sweden, yesterday, was attended by 13 European operators from the Vodafone AirTouch Group.
