Carrier Briefs

BOSTON (06/08/2000) - Extreme Networks Inc. has introduced Summit1I and Summit5I Gigabit Ethernet switches for carriers designed to deliver flexible bandwidth to customers. The switches connect customer sites with metropolitan fiber-optic networks. The two new boxes support guaranteed service quality to enable voice-over-IP services as well as video. They let service providers sell chunks of Ethernet bandwidth dedicated to specific applications or users. The gear supports secure metropolitan-area networks among customer sites. The switches will be available in July.

BellSouth Corp. has expanded its DSL offerings to include another variety that supports equal download and upload speeds. The new service runs at 192K-bps in both directions. This is the carrier's second symmetric offering to go with its 384K-bps service. BellSouth's other DSL offerings are asymmetric, with download speeds faster than upload speeds. BellSouth will wholesale the service to ISPs and other carriers. The company is selling private line connections as well as frame relay services, and plans to add ATM services next month. Global Data Services can be offered in New York because Bell Atlantic has won federal approval to sell long-distance services there.

The carrier is still restricted from selling long-distance in its other home states that stretch from Maine to Virginia.
