Globalstar Launches Phone Service in México

Globalstar Telecommunications Ltd., a provider of telephone service via satellite, this week launched a preliminary version of its service in México.

The company plans to launch full commercial service in February, after it completes testing of its local gateway and dealer training, the company said in a press release.

The Globalstar system is designed to provide digital voice services via satellite to a variety of users, such as cellular phone users who travel frequently outside their cellular service coverage area, and companies with operations in remote locations where phone service isn't available, the company said.

Globalstar de México is a joint venture between Mexican company Principia, S. de R.L., Loral Space & Communications and Vodafone AirTouch.

Principia founded Globalstar de México in 1996. Principia is also the owner of Optel Telecomunicaciones, which provides data communications services in 17 Mexican cities.

Globalstar, based in San Jose, California, can be reached at +1-408-933-4000 or athttp://www.globalstar.com/.
