Matrix Internet SA today launched high-speed broadband digital subscriber line (DSL), cable modem and wireless Internet access to business and residential customers in Brazil. The company is the country's fifth largest ISP (Internet service provider).
Matrix expects to roll out its xDSL (extended DSL) technology offering Internet access speeds of 2M bits per second (bps) in all 50 of its POPs (points of presence) throughout Brazil, the ISP said in a statement issued today. XDSL service in the cities of Curitiba and Porto Alegre should be available by the end of the current quarter, Matrix added.
The ISP first begun offering cable-based access to the Internet access in partnership with cable television operator Globo Cabo S.A. towards the end of last year. The service is currently available to a half million Globo Cabo subscribers in the financial capital of Brazil, Sao Paulo. The company expects to roll out this service by the middle of this year to seven other Brazilian cities, according to the statement.
As for wireless broadband Internet access, Matrix is operating a service in the city of Campinas using Lucent Technologies Inc.'s point-to-point technology.
The ISP said it plans to extend the service over the coming months to other areas in Brazil based on customer demand.
A subsidiary of global communications company Primus Telecommunications Group Inc., Matrix Internet said in today's statement that it currently has more than 50,000 subscribers.
