Motorola, VeriSign to work on secure wireless transactions

Motorola and Internet security services provider VeriSign have signed an agreement to develop secure e-commerce transactions on wireless devices.

Officials said the goal is to allow consumers to purchase items using an Internet-enabled wireless phone while keeping purchase information private and secure.

Preliminary plans call for Motorola and VeriSign to jointly fund the development of a broad range of offerings for wireless device manufacturers, carriers, consumers and e-commerce service providers.

Those might include supporting Wireless Application Protocol traffic secured using the Wireless Transport Layer Security standard, and end-to-end authentication to let mobile users identify themselves and to sign in a way that can be verified throughout the entire communications channel.
