Newbridge to Expand China Data Network

Newbridge Networks Corp. has won a contract to expand the data network of China's Guangdong Post and Telecommunications Administration (GPTA). After expansion, the system will be the largest such data network in China, according to Newbridge.

The contract, the financial terms of which were not disclosed, is the latest in a string of orders from GPTA for Newbridge. In April 1999, the company signed a deal to supply its MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch for the base of a province-wide frame relay network and in February 1998 the company won a US$32 million deal to expand the organization's data network.

Newbridge said the work on the latest deal has already begun. The network was extended to the city of Dongguan at the end of 1999 and the remainder of the expansion is scheduled for completion in 2000.
