Crosswave Wins Image City Data Center Contract

Japanese new generation telecommunications carrier Crosswave Communications Inc. says it has won a contract to build and operate a data center for Skip City, a planned center for the digital imaging industry.

Construction of the 5 billion yen (US$48.6 million) data center will begin in early 2001 and operations are scheduled to start in 2003, said Crosswave. The Skip City project is being promoted by Saitama prefecture, an area north of Tokyo, and a group of 22 companies as a production and archive center for the new digital imaging industry. Among its flagship tenants will be the NHK Archives, the archives of Japan's public broadcaster.

Among the 22 companies promoting the project is Internet Initiative Japan Inc., which owns a 40 percent stake in Crosswave. Sony Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. each own a 30 percent stake in the company which is Japan's first example of a new generation carrier. It employs dark fiber -- unused fiber from other carriers obtained on very long term leases -- and techniques such as DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) to offer high bandwidth, low cost data networking services.
