Symantec links Host IDS into ManHunt net monitor

Symantec has expanded its ManHunt network intrusion detection system (IDS) by adding a software agent to monitor and analyze events detected by its host-based intrusion detection software, Host IDS 4.0.

The new software, ManHunt Smart Agent for Symantec Host IDS, will allow organizations to monitor and manage intrusion information for hosts and networks from one console, Symantec, of Cupertino, California, said in a statement Tuesday.

Similar software agents are already available to link Manhunt with other intrusion detection systems from Check Point Software Technologies Ltd., Cisco Systems Inc., Enterasys Networks Inc., Internet Security Systems Inc., NetScreen Technologies Inc., and Okena Inc. or the open-source network intrusion detection systems Snort and Tripwire, Symantec said.

Symantec acquired the ManHunt software when it bought Recourse Technologies Inc. last August. ManHunt uses a combination of protocol anomaly detection, signature detection, traffic state profiling and statistical flow analysis to identify network intrusions, according to Symantec.

ManHunt Smart Agent for Symantec Host IDS retails for US$495, Symantec estimates, and is available from the company's resellers around the world.
