ASP market gets antiviral injection

Virus and Web security software have joined the application service provider market with the launch of Network Associates' ASP arm, myCIO.com.

According to Network Associates, the ASP-customised products provide company networks with continually updated virus and security software. The company said myCIO's products were "version-less", because they would be instantly updated as soon as new virus or Internet security threats were discovered.

Network Associates' sales support director, Dean Stockwell, said the company formed myCIO in the US last year in direct response to customer demand for ASP-based Internet security.

Stockwell said no local partnerships had been finalised with myCIO yet, but Network Associates expected the ASP arm would have a significant Australian presence in six months time.

Stockwell said that although Network Associates would target myCIO's products towards all Australian IT business managers, the company expected most of myCIO's revenues would be generated though medium-sized Internet businesses -- those with about 500 workstations.

The cost of the company's virus scanning ASP software, VirusScan ASaP, will start at $US3.50 per month. Its security assessment software, CyberCop ASaP, will cost $US500 for six scans. Stockwell said this costing system was on a per-workstation basis. Therefore, for a company with 500 workstations using both products, the annual cost of the services would be about $US271,000.
