Vodafone in $160b bid for Mannesmann

UK mobile phone company, Vodafone Airtouch is in the throes of launching a takeover bid for German telco, Mannesmann.

Executives from the companies were expected to meet in Dusseldorf, Germany yesterday to discuss the estimated $160 billion offer.

According to reports, the merger would create the world's largest telecommunications company.

Speculation over the takeover has been mounting for sometime following Mannesmann's acquisition of Orange for $US33 billion in late October.
