The core WAN router market grew 23 percent between the third and fourth quarters last year, and Juniper Networks Inc. continued to gain share on Cisco Systems Inc., according to the latest figures from Dell'Oro Group.

Worldwide revenue for core WAN routers jumped to US$836 million in the fourth quarter 2000 from $680 million in third quarter, Dell'Oro says. Juniper's share increased another 4 percent to 34 percent while Cisco's dropped 4 percent to 65 percent, the market research firm states.

Juniper's share has doubled from the first quarter, according to Dell'Oro.

Juniper's revenue in the fourth quarter climbed 39 percent, half the growth rate it enjoyed in third quarter. But as in previous quarters, it was more than double Cisco's growth rate, which once again lagged behind the overall market at 15 percent.

Avici Systems Inc.'s revenue doubled, from $4.4 million in the third quarter to $8.8 million in the fourth quarter, Dell'Oro states.
