Basslink back in service

Telco services resumed on Friday

Basslink returned to service at 11.51am, the cable’s operator announced this morning.

In addition to power transmission, optical fibre laid with the cable, which stretches from Tasmania to Victoria, is used for telco services.

Telecommunications services on the cable returned to service on Friday.

The cable suffered a fault in December, with the outage blamed for degraded Internet speeds for some Tasmanians.

“We are pleased to resume normal operations,” Basslink CEO Malcolm Eccles said.

“I would like to thank our repair team for their hard work and commitment over the past six months. I would also like to thank Alcatel-Lucent, Prysmian and the Basslink operational team, led by Joska Ferencz and Mark Shilliday.”

Basslink is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fault.
