Nokia inks $US250m deal to expand Taiwan GSM network

Finland's Nokia says it has signed a $US250 million contract with Taiwan's KG Telecom to expand the operator's GSM (global system for mobile communications) based cellular network.

Under the terms of the contract, Nokia will expand KG Telecom's existing GSM1800 network to cover northern Taiwan, including the capital city of Taipei. Its recently completed GPRS (general packet radio service) network will also be expanded to the north of the island under the deal, said Nokia. GPRS is a new system designed for use on GSM-based networks to deliver packet switched data services at speeds up to 100K bits per second.
