The unified Unix variant codenamed Project Monterey being jointly developed by IBM, the Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) and Sequent Computer Systems will be launched in the third quarter of next year, SCO President for Asia-Pacific James Clark said.

The new company is a joint venture between local conglomerate Keppel Telecommunications & Transportation Ltd. (Keppel T&T) and media company Singapore Press Holdings Ltd. (SPH), who are also partners in cellular phone operator MobileOne Asia Pte. Ltd. (M1). D1 is the first new ISP in Singapore since the market was fully liberalized by TAS in October last year.

Vietnam losing Y2K race, telco reports

Vietnam is behind schedule on its nationwide year 2000 (Y2K) remediation work and is unlikely to finish the task before January 1, 2000, according to a report published last week by the national telecommunications carrier, Vietnam Posts & Telecommunications (VNPT).
Less than 10 per cent of non year 2000-compliant equipment country-wide has been repaired or replaced, according to the report. In addition, more than 50 per cent of government agencies, cities and provinces are yet to map out year 2000 implementation plans.

Asian Telcos to Bypass U.S. Internet Routing Fees

A consortium of Asian telecommunications carriers will set up its own Internet exchange in the U.S. to avoid millions of dollars of "inequitable" routing fees that U.S. carriers currently charge, the carriers said late last week.
The Asia-Pacific Internet Community (APIC) -- comprising South Korea's Dacom Corp., Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co. Ltd. (KDD) of Japan, Cable & Wireless HKT of Hong Kong, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. and Australia's Telstra Corp. -- will establish a joint Internet router at the Palo Alto Internet Exchange (PAIX) in the U.S., according to John Hibbard, Telstra managing director for global wholesale operations.

SingTel in $US206m deal with Global Carriers

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has signed service contracts worth $S350 million ($3ll.7 million) with global network providers Equant Network Services, the Global One consortium and Infonet Services, the telecomms company announced Wednesday.
The three service providers will use national carrier SingTel's network and support services as well as distribution channels to extend their global services into Singapore and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region, thus serving their multinational customers operating in the region, SingTel said.

Compaq to Launch Windows CE Device in Asia

Compaq Computer Corp. on Thursday will begin selling in Asia a color palm-size PC based on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows CE operating system for S$740 (US$435.3), the company said last week.
Known as the Aero 2130, the PC combines the capabilities of a PIM (personal information manager), voice recorder and Internet music player and can operate as a e-mail device, fax and pager, the company said. The device will also employ Pocket Outlook applications to function as a companion to full-featured PCs, Compaq added.
