IBM trying to promote internal cycle of growth

IBM is working to promote a "virtuous cycle of growth" within its operations, according to a senior Big Blue executive. The hope is that increased employee productivity results in collaboration which in turn stimulates innovation which then drives productivity and so on.

Novell not to release Q4 results until Dec. 1

Novell won't release its fourth-quarter financial results until Dec. 1, according to information on the company's Web site and a Thursday 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Recent comments from Novell's new second-in-command earlier this week had suggested that the software vendor's results would appear imminently in tandem with restructuring news. The company's financial year ended Oct. 31.

SugarCRM to open office in China

Open-source customer relationship management startup SugarCRM is planning to open an office in Shanghai later this year initially to house 15 to 20 engineering and quality assurance staff, according to the company's chief executive officer (CEO).

IBM leads group to create open-source storage

IBM and eight other storage vendors are teaming up to form an open-source organization initially called Aperi, Big Blue announced Tuesday. The companies intend to work together to develop common storage software to manage different vendors' systems, making it easier for users dealing with disparate storage systems. The software will be made available free of charge.

Virtualization startup Propero thinks big

Desktop virtualization startup Propero is due to release version 5.0 of its workSpace virtualization software Monday. The software enables users to access any application from any computer in any location, according to Propero's co-founders, helping companies to significantly lower their IT costs. The startup is also to announce that European investment bank Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein will roll out workSpace to 7,000 employes worldwide.

Novell: No comment on layoff rumours

Troubled software vendor Novell wouldn't comment on a growing number of reports and rumors circulating Monday that the company is about to lay off as much as 20 percent of its workforce as a way of cutting costs.

Black Duck makes service free until year-end

Black Duck Software is making its protexIP/OnDemand software-compliance assessment service available free of charge from Tuesday through the end of the year, according to a company executive. The service analyzes software projects to determine whether they contain any pieces of open-source code and ensure that the code meets licensing obligations.
