Nokia to ship WAP Server 1.0 in December

Nokia yesterday announced that its WAP Server 1.0 software aimed at corporate users will be released worldwide on December 15.

Nokia designed WAP Server 1.0 to allow businesses to leverage the Internet in a mobile environment, while at the same time providing them with the means to maintain control and provide secure access to data, the company said in a statement.

The open server platform Nokia WAP Server offering complies with the WAP 1.1 specification and also offers what the company billed as the first commercially available implementation of WLTS (wireless transportation layer security). WAP (wireless application protocol) is a specification aimed at allowing wireless devices access to data from the Internet.

Nokia claimed that some 10,000 copies of the Nokia WAP Server already have been deployed by developers worldwide, including more than 1,000 installations in the US.

Pricing for Nokia WAP server 1.0 for corporate use will start from $US10,000, Nokia said.

In addition, Nokia in the beginning of December will also offer to developers a complementary trial version of the Nokia WAP Server 1.0, as well as a new version of the Nokia WAP Toolkit, the company said. Both products will be made available over the Internet.

Separately, Nokia and Amsterdam-based Getronics NV yesterday announced a global partnership under which Getronics will integrate Nokia's WAP Server with its existing Internet and intranet offerings for financial services as well as other electronic business sectors.

Getronics will also set up "WAP Centres of Excellence" in Finland and Italy that will support its European subsidiaries in delivering WAP solutions to clients, the company said in a statement.

Nokia in recent months has also announced partnerships with both Hewlett-Packard and IBM, under which the computer vendors will market and distribute Nokia's WAP Server software on some of their servers.
