31 per cent of UK firms already feel Y2K pinch

Roughly one in three large companies in the UK has already experienced a year-2000 problem, according to the results of a survey published yesterday.

The study, which was published by Taskforce 2000 along with disaster-recovery company Adam Associates, revealed 31 per cent of Britain's top 1000 companies had already experienced Y2K-related problems. The study didn't specify what kind of problems the firms suffered.

Of the 1000 firms surveyed, 97 per cent are preparing for potential system failures, 86 per cent for telecommunications glitches and 84 per cent for possible power failures.

Taskforce 2000 is a nonprofit organization initially set up by the British government that acts as an independent agency overseeing the country's Y2K readiness.
