CA Snags Snare Networks

Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) has acquired Snare Networks Corp., which designs and develops security software and also offers related services.

"The key piece of (Snare) technology that was very attractive to us is their VPN (virtual private network) technology," said Narender Mangalam, CA director for security software.

CA intends to market Snare's VPN product under the existing CA eTrust line, Mangalam said. The product will be called eTrust VPN and will be out soon. Although some integration of Snare and CA technologies will have to be undertaken, Mangalam said that the company doesn't anticipate any problems and that the main change will be in the name of the software.

"We're very excited about this acquisition," he said. "We felt that VPN was one of the pieces that was missing in our eTrust suite."

The acquisition is complete, though financial details are not being disclosed because Snare was privately held.

The Islandia, New York-based CA intends to continue developing and marketing Snare's VPN technology, as well as Snare's line of security products. Founded in 1992, Snare has headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. CA doesn't plan to lay off any Snare employees, Mangalam said.
