Survey: Marketing moves in on e-comm strategy

More marketing executives now have responsibility for creating and directing their companies' e-commerce strategies, according to a study released by Zona Research's IntelliQuest Information Group.

Of 1300 IT professionals surveyed, 28 per cent said the marketing department oversaw the company's e-commerce direction in the second quarter of this year, up from 15 per cent in the first quarter, IntelliQuest said. Meanwhile, fewer IT executives are overseeing their company's Web site, dropping from 59 per cent in the first quarter to 46 per cent in the second quarter, the Zona subsidiary said.

According to the study, companies are more interested in how the internet provides a competitive advantage rather than "what is internet technology."

Other findings from the Zona Enterprise Usage study:

43 per cent of companies plan to implement their e-commerce plans during 2000.

64 per cent don't have a budget for Java-related development.

46 per cent of enterprises deployed Web application servers in their organisations.

14 per cent don't know if their network security has been hacked.

IT professionals who participated in study came from enterprises with 20 or more computer users and $1 million or more in annual revenue, IntelliQuest said.
