Compaq Announces Alpha Server, Workstation

Compaq Computer Corp. today took aim at enterprises, introducing an AlphaServer and an Alpha-based workstation, according to a company statement.

The AlphaServer GS6OE features 64-bit Very Large Memory capabilities, seven system bus slots, up to 12G bytes of memory and runs either Tru64 Unix or OpenVMS operating systems, Compaq said. It will roll out next month starting at $85,000, the company said.

Called the AlphaStation XP 1000, the workstation is furnished with a 667-MHz Alpha 21264 chip, a 4M-byte Level 2 cache and up to 2G bytes of memory. It supports Windows NT, Unix and Linux among operating systems, Compaq said. Pricing information wasn't available at press time.
