Trio Unite to Form Greater China Portal

The three leading portal providers in their respective markets have joined together to form the Greater China Portal Alliance (GCPA), a marketing tie-up aimed at boosting 'Net traffic to their Web sites, one of the companies announced yesterday.

The trio are Hong Kong's Netvigator, part of Cable & Wireless HKT (formerly known as Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd.), China's Netease and Taiwan's KIMO. Between them, the three partners' portals account for more than 12 million [M] page views per day, according to a statement issued yesterday by Netvigator's owner, Cable & Wireless HKT.

Greater China is traditionally defined as the region encompassing Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. Currently a hot industry buzzword, a portal is a Web site that acts as the first entry point to other resources on the Internet.

Initially, Netvigator, Netease and KIMO will co-brand their offerings to enable trilateral online banner advertising exchanges, a combined logo and joint marketing. Users can click on a GCPA icon on any of the portals to gain access to the other two Web sites. The trio also launched an online customer survey yesterday as a way to better meet the needs of their users.
