Amdahl merging its operations with Fujitsu

Amdahl is rolling its operations back into the same locations around Australia as those of its parent company, Fujitsu.

This week saw the completion of the move of Amdahl's head office into the same Lane Cove premises as Fujitsu.

Fujitsu bought the majority of the shares it did not own in the mainframe and services company in 1997. Until then it had been a minority shareholder in Amdahl.

Steve Liscoe, general manager of Amdahl Australia, said the move would help reduce costs and leave Amdahl a freer hand in building its brand name.

"We are stronger together with Fujitsu than we are apart," Liscoe said.

He said co-location for the rest of Australia would follow the merging of the head office and Sydney operations.

"It's just a matter of sorting out issues like extra phone lines," Liscoe said.

Amdahl still relies heavily on its IBM-compatible mainframe business for revenues. However, it is increasingly turning to services and reselling other company's hardware, such as that from Sun Microsystems, to bolster its income.
