Iridium announces new initiatives

Struggling satellite communications provider, Iridium announced yesterday a raft of new initiatives to boost value to customers.

Changes to the company's international satellite call charging structure and satellite call charges and the introduction of subscriber equipment packages are expected to benefit customers with value-added offerings.

Iridium's satellite call charging increments will be adjusted to ten seconds and the multiple price zones will be dropped to one flat rate for all international calls, officials said.

The charges are effective from 1 July.

Customers will also benefit from equipment package deals from Motorola and Kyocera. Satellite Iridium handsets, antenna adapters, portable auxiliary antenna and a high capacity battery will be bundled together in a single package.

Iridium's new focus comes off the back of recent poor financial results and subscriber numbers.

Last month, Iridium posted a first-quarter loss of $US505million on revenue of $US1.45 million and announced it had only signed up 10,294 customers, compared with the 100,000 customers the company had promised lendors and investors it would have by now.
