Applications management standard proposed

Computer Associates International (CA) and J.P. Morgan & Co. are co-sponsoring a standard specification for an application management framework focused on business processes and heterogeneous computing, the two companies said last week.

The initial draft specification of the companies' proposed Application Management Interface (AMI) is to be submitted to The Open Group, a vendor-sponsored initiative focused on technology integration.

An object model based on AMI is intended to enable reporting of software behaviors to any number of IT management tools. AMI defines an open, two-way API (application programming interface) and was written by J.P. Morgan in conjunction with CA, which has implemented it in its Unicenter TNG enterprise management software.

One goal of AMI is the alignment of technology resources with business priorities by enabling technology managers to prioritise IT services based on business impact, officials from the two companies said.

AMI also will provide facilities for defining resources that affect business processes; establishment of a standard mechanism for managing control points within an application; and creation of a technology-neutral approach for integrating with external systems management frameworks.
