Telstra announces $1.8 billion profit

Telstra yesterday announced record profit earnings after tax and minorities of $1.8 billion for the six months ended December 31, 1998.

Strong growth in mobiles, Internet and data products contributed to the results, which were 16.8 per cent above 1997 results for the same period.

Total revenues for the period increased by 6.2 per cent to $9.239 billion, officials announced.

Traditional telephony products remained flat for the telco giant, with local calls up by 5.5 per cent to $1.376 billion and a reduction in revenues from long-distance products. Officials said STD calls were down by less than 2 per cent and international calls were down by 14.9 per cent.

See Computerworld, March 19, for a more detailed look at the results.
