Telstra's DMO project hotting up

Telstra has been doing its damnedest to keep under wraps developments in its mammoth Data Mode of Operation network upgrade.

However, all could be revealed in April when a successful bidder for the tender is to be announced.

Despite reports indicating an announcement is due by the end of this month, Telstra officials told Computerworld the announcement can be expected in April. However, industry players involved with the tenders expect June to be a more likely timeslot for the announcement.

In the project, Telstra is upgrading its network to provide voice and data services to accommodate growth in the Internet. The planned network is said to be based on Internet Protocol and ATM technologies.

According to Telstra, reports that the project is valued at around $1 billion are incorrect. Whilst not revealing a correct figure, Telstra said the project is less than $1 billion.

Several consortia are believed to be competing for the tender. Whilst Telstra is believed to be looking for small, niche players, a strong contender for the project is a joint bid believed to be between Alcatel, Cisco, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard.
