Progress Revamps Flagship Suite

Progress Software Corp. has released Progress Version 9, a suite for creating and managing applications whose three components -- an application development tool, an application server and a relational database -- have been updated.

The Progress Version 9 suite is intended to allow greater scalability in an open platform environment, said Dan Potter, the company's marketing director. Developers can create their applications without concern for the environment in which it will be deployed; decisions about the best environment can be made when the application is ready, Potter said.

The suite's application server, called Open AppServer, lets users deploy shared application components across a range of platforms. Meanwhile, ProVision Plus is a multi-tiered client/server and Web-based integrated application development environment. Finally, the Progress RDBMS lets users store and manage SQL and 4GL application data, the company said.

Open AppServer costs US$725 for a four-user license and is available now for Windows NT and major Unix platforms. Progress RDBMS is available for Windows '95 and '98, Windows NT and major Unix platforms. It costs $1,325 for a five-user workgroup license. ProVision Plus is available now for Windows '95 and '98, Windows NT and major Unix platforms and the price begins at $4,400 for a single-user license.

The updated product suite is the "largest release in the history of Progress," Potter said.

Progress has partnerships with some 2,300 independent software vendors (ISVs) which use the company's technology to create packaged software applications.
