Network Solutions, Yahoo ink deal

Internet portal company Yahoo will promote domain name registration services from Network Solutions (NSI) as part of a deal the companies have announced.

NSI will advertise and be promoted on various Yahoo portal sites globally, including in the UK and Ireland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Japan, Korea, China, Australia and New Zealand, Latin America and the US.

The deal takes effect on January 1, said Doug Wolford, NSI senior vice president of marketing and sales. The agreement between NSI and Yahoo is aimed at small businesses that want to develop an online presence and at individuals who see the worth of having a Web address, Wolford said.

"More and more people are recognising that a Web address is like a Social Security number -- you have to have one," he said.

NSI also will continue to advertise on other portal sites, but the Yahoo deal was especially intriguing to NSI because "they just have tremendous reach and they have tremendous reach globally".

The two companies have had an "arrangement" for the last several months, which led to the just-announced deal.

"We think this is the start of a very mutually beneficial type of relationship," Wolford said, adding that he expects additional promotional efforts and the like will emerge from the relationship.

The Herndon, Virginia-based NSI offers World Wide Web address registration and services for the .com, .net and .org domains.
