Progress Software Launches Network Tool

Progress Software Corp. today released the first in a series of products to manage and monitor enterprise applications and networks.

IPQoS gathers statistics on TCP/IP port usage for simple mail transport protocol (SMTP) for sending e-mail, point of presence (POP) services for receiving e-mail and groupware, electronic-commerce and World Wide Web servers.

The software monitors and collects data on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT as well as on Novell Inc.'s NetWare file systems and NetWare Services. IPQoS files statistical reports about enterprise network performance to various managers, providing details in terminology that specific executives will understand, said Joe McDermott, a product channel marketing manager for Progress.

The product sends messages regarding network problems to a management display, "but we all know that people don't sit in front of displays all day," McDermott said, adding that IPQoS also can be set up to send alerts to IS managers or others via page, e-mail or fax. A future version will have an Internet telephony interface.

IPQoS is the first offering from Progress' Internet Software Quality (ISQ) Product Unit, formed in May 1997 and based in Nashua, New Hampshire. The software is available now and costs US$995 for a 10-device license with volume discounts also available.

IPQoS works for networks that have 15 to 20 nodes, but also scales to handle networks of Fortune 500 companies that have both a lot of nodes and remote locations, McDermott said.
