New modems and 30 per cent market share for 3Com

3Com is well on the way to achieving its target of 30 per cent market share in the local modem market, Australian managing director, Gerhard Rumpff said last week.

According to Rumpff, 3Com has extended its 5 per cent hold on the modem market, announced in March, to close to 25 per cent and is "very confident" it will make 30 per cent by the end of the year.

Last week's release of a new line of 56K V.90 standard desktop modems will help 3Com move closer to its goal with more choices available for customers, Rumpff said.

"We've really established strong momentum in the market . . . [and we're] putting tremendous amount of pressure on the competition," Rumpff said.

The new modems, the 3Com US Robotics 56K V.90 External Professional Message modem and 3Com US Robotics 56K V.90 External Message modem - provide data, voice and message functionalities in a single product as well as the ability to receive voice and fax messages even with the computer turned off.

The modems will start shipping in Australia later this month and are priced at $329 (Professional edition) and $279.

Rumpff also announced 3Com has released a new PC Card and modem.
