Cabletron rises in Q3 '98 switch stats

Cabletron is singing to the praises of the Dell'Oro Group, which has released Q3 '98 figures for world wide switching markets that indicate the vendor is rising to the top of the pile.

Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router is responsible for the vendor's lead in the chassis-based Layer 3 Switch category at 33 per cent market share. Dell'Oro reports Cabletron also leads in chassis-based Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet port shipments at 22.4 per cent.

The Dell'Oro figures also show that for Layer 3 modular switches, Cabletron leads at 31 per cent, followed by Bay Networks at 29 per cent, 3Com at 20 per cent and Cisco at 10 per cent market share by ports shipped.

However, Cisco still retained a healthy lead in the total revenues for all Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches in the quarter, capturing 47 per cent of the market.

Cisco is trailed by 3Com at 14 per cent, Bay Networks at 13 per cent, Cabletron at 12 per cent, and Xylan at 4 per cent total revenue share for the quarter.
