COMDEX: CA's Wang Looks to 3-D Future

Within a decade, 3-D interfaces will be the norm for business applications, as IT attempts to more fully represent the real world, according to Computer Associates International Inc.'s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Charles Wang.

Wang, who is also the company's co-founder, described how his company is preparing for the coming 3-D future which he dubbed "next frontier technology" by adding more 3-D interfaces to its applications.

He referred to the 3-D features that have formed an integral part of CA's systems management software Unicenter TNG for the past three years, as well as the company's acquisition of two 3-D specialist companies -- Orem, Utah-based Viewpoint DataLabs International Inc. and Los Angeles-based 3Name3D -- last month.

"Technology must be pushed to a more fundamental purpose," Wang said. "We shouldn't try to change reality to fit our models. The real world is messy and complex like today's IT landscape."

The other main theme of his keynote speech was a call for a change in thinking as to how IT can help businesses. While the focus predominantly has been on IT helping a company improve its bottom line, Wang argued that a move towards IT improving a business' top line -- or sales and revenue -- is now necessary. "It's less about saving money, more about making money," he said.
