New telco joins local industry fray

A new telecommunications company offering timed-based long distance and mobile phone services to residential and corporate customers was launched in Sydney last Friday.

Called G3 Communications, the company is Australian-owned and funded and expects to turn over $122 million annually. Sydney-based venture capital fund, Australian Authorised Investments raised more than $80 million to fund the organisation, officials said.

According to officials, G3 Communications will generate 350 jobs in NSW over the next three years and expects to target ethnic residential and ethnic small to medium business groups.

Priority customers will include small corporate organisations and residents throughout Australia as well as government customers to a lesser degree, officials said.

Customers signed up already include Minolta Business Equipment, Chase Manhattan Bank and Professional Advantage.

In addition to STD and mobile services, G3 will also offer specialist phone services including 1300 calls and universal numbers for mobiles and home phone numbers.

Glenn Christensen, former head of Primarius Communications, heads up the operation which is based in North Sydney.
