Pentagon plans new voice, video and data network

SmartSwitch technology from Cabletron Systems has been selected as the basis for a new network at the US Pentagon.

The project, announced last week, is part of the Pentagon's Above Ground Telecommunications Backbone (ATB).

Officials said the network will connect 135,000 users on a single, high-speed network combining voice, video and data.

Cabletron's SmartSwitch technology was selected by GTE based on durability and future proofing.

According to officials, the technology "supports the Pentagon's connectivity needs well into the next century" and consolidates multiple networks into the one facility.

Officials said five above-ground floors for 24,000 tenants will be constructed over five, two-year phases.
